24-Hour pH and Impedance Monitoring
At Advanced Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease, Sukedhara, Kathmandu, we offer advanced 24-hour pH and impedance monitoring to accurately diagnose acid reflux and related disorders.
We are the center with the most extensive experience in Nepal. We are using equipment and software from USA.
This test measures both acid and non-acid reflux from the stomach into the food pipe (esophagus) over a 24-hour period.
Why is it done?
- Persistent acidity or heartburn despite treatment
- Regurgitation (food or sour fluid coming back)
- Chronic cough or throat irritation suspected due to reflux
- Chest pain not related to the heart
- Evaluation before anti-reflux surgery
What does this test measure?
- Acid reflux (pH monitoring)
- Non-acid reflux (impedance monitoring)
- Frequency and duration of reflux episodes
- Correlation of symptoms with reflux events
How is the procedure performed?
- A thin, soft tube (catheter) is gently passed through your nose into the esophagus
- The catheter is connected to a small portable recorder
- You will go home and continue normal daily activities
- You will be asked to record symptoms, meals, and sleep times
- After 24 hours, the catheter is removed and data is analyzed
Is it painful?
The test is not painful, but you may feel mild discomfort in the nose or throat initially. Most patients tolerate it well.
How should I prepare?
- Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the test
- Certain medications (especially acid-suppressing drugs) may need to be stopped as advised
- Inform your doctor about all medications
What happens after the test?
- The catheter is removed easily
- You can resume normal activities immediately
- Your doctor will review the results and guide further treatment
Is it safe?
Yes. This is a safe and minimally invasive test with very low risk.
