ERCP

At Advanced Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease, Sukedhara, Kathmandu, we can arrange and facilitate ERCP services for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas. ERCP is a specialized endoscopic procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to treat problems in the bile duct, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Why is it done?

  • Stones in the bile duct (CBD stones)
  • Obstructive jaundice
  • Bile duct stricture (narrowing)
  • Pancreatic duct problems
  • Bile leak after surgery
  • Tumors affecting bile or pancreatic ducts

How is the procedure performed?

  • A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth into the small intestine (duodenum)
  • A small tube is used to inject contrast dye into the bile and pancreatic ducts
  • X-ray images are taken to identify the problem
  • Treatment can be done at the same time
  • The procedure usually takes about 30–60 minutes

What treatments can be done during ERCP?

  • Removal of bile duct stones
  • Placement of stents to relieve blockage
  • Dilatation of strictures
  • Control of bile leaks

Is it painful?

The procedure is performed under sedation or anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure.

How should I prepare?

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure
  • Inform your doctor about medications, allergies, and medical conditions
  • Blood tests may be required before the procedure
  • Follow instructions regarding blood thinners

What happens after the procedure?

  • You will be observed for a few hours
  • Mild throat discomfort or bloating may occur
  • Most patients can go home the same or next day

Is it safe?

ERCP is an advanced and generally safe procedure when performed by experienced specialists. However, like any procedure, there are some risks: pancreatitis, bleeding, infection, and perforation (rare). Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits before the procedure.

When should you seek medical attention?

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Fever
  • Black stools or bleeding
