Upper GI Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)

At Advanced Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease, Sukedhara, Kathmandu, we provide safe, modern, and patient-friendly upper GI endoscopy services for accurate diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases. Upper GI endoscopy, also called gastroscopy, is a commonly performed procedure that allows your doctor to directly examine the inside of your food pipe (esophagus), stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).

Why is it done?

  • Persistent upper abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Difficulty or pain while swallowing
  • Recurrent vomiting or vomiting with blood
  • Black stools or suspected internal bleeding
  • Unexplained weight loss or anemia
  • Diagnosing ulcers, gastritis, infections (such as H. pylori), and tumors

How is the procedure performed?

A thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is gently passed through your mouth into the stomach. The procedure usually takes about 5–10 minutes.<br> At our center, we use modern equipment and provide local throat anesthesia and/or mild sedation to ensure maximum comfort and safety.

Is it painful?

The procedure is generally not painful. You may feel slight discomfort or gagging at the beginning, but most patients tolerate it very well, especially with sedation.

How should I prepare?

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure
  • Inform your doctor about any medications, allergies, or medical conditions
  • Follow instructions carefully if you are taking blood thinners or diabetes medications

What can be done during endoscopy?

  • Take biopsies for accurate diagnosis
  • Control bleeding
  • Remove certain foreign bodies or small growths
  • Dilate narrowed areas (strictures)

What happens after the procedure?

  • Mild throat discomfort may occur for a few hours
  • If sedation is given, avoid driving or important decisions for the rest of the day
  • Most patients can go home the same day

Is it safe?

Upper GI endoscopy is a very safe procedure when performed by trained specialists. Complications are rare.

When should you seek medical attention?

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Fever
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Black stools or fresh bleeding
