Biofeedback Therapy (Anorectal Disorders)
At Advanced Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease, Sukedhara, Kathmandu, we offer specialized biofeedback therapy for patients with bowel control and defecation disorders.
We are the most experienced center in Nepal for biofeedback therapy.
Biofeedback therapy is a non-surgical, evidence-based treatment that helps patients improve coordination and strength of the muscles involved in bowel movements.
What is biofeedback therapy?
Biofeedback uses a small sensor placed in the rectum to measure muscle activity. The information is displayed on a screen, allowing you to see how your muscles are working in real time. With guidance, you learn how to properly relax and contract these muscles to achieve normal bowel function.
Who needs this therapy?
- Chronic constipation (especially due to dyssynergic defecation)
- Difficulty in passing stool despite straining
- Fecal incontinence (loss of bowel control)
- Incomplete evacuation sensation
- Patients with abnormal findings on anorectal manometry
How is the procedure done?
A small, soft probe is gently inserted into the rectum. You will be guided through simple exercises such as squeezing, relaxing, and pushing. The session usually lasts about 20–30 minutes and is repeated over multiple visits for best results.
Is it painful?
The procedure is not painful. You may feel slight discomfort initially, but most patients tolerate it very well.
How should I prepare?
- Usually no major preparation is required
- You may be asked to empty your bowel before the session
- Follow any specific instructions given by your doctor
What are the benefits?
- Improves bowel movement coordination
- Reduces constipation and straining
- Improves control over bowel movements
- Avoids or delays the need for surgery
Is it safe?
Biofeedback therapy is very safe and non-invasive, with no significant risks.
