Urea Breath Test (H. pylori Test)

At Advanced Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease, Sukedhara, Kathmandu, we offer Urea Breath Test as a simple, accurate, and non-invasive method to detect H. pylori infection. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a common bacteria that infects the stomach and is a major cause of gastritis, ulcers, and some stomach cancers.

Why is it done?

  • Persistent acidity or indigestion
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Suspected gastric or duodenal ulcers
  • History of H. pylori infection (to confirm eradication after treatment)

How does the test work?

You will be asked to drink a special solution containing urea. If H. pylori is present in the stomach, it breaks down urea and releases carbon dioxide, which is detected in your breath samples.

How is the procedure performed?

  • A baseline breath sample is collected
  • You drink the test solution
  • After a short interval (usually 15–30 minutes), another breath sample is collected
  • The samples are analyzed for the presence of H. pylori

Is it painful?

No. This is a completely painless and non-invasive test.

How should I prepare?

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the test
  • Avoid antibiotics and bismuth-containing medications for at least 2–4 weeks before the test
  • Stop acid-suppressing medications (like PPIs) as advised by your doctor
  • Inform your doctor about all medications

What happens after the test?

  • You can resume normal diet and activities immediately
  • Your doctor will review the results and advise treatment if needed

Is it safe?

Yes. The test is very safe and suitable for most patients.
